Major Workflow Enhancements, Large Model Performance Improvements, and Expanded GLTF/GLB Support

Cotati, CA – Carbon Graphics LLC is pleased to announce the release of Geo STUDIO Pro 4.2, the latest version of its professional 3D content creation and optimization environment for the Modeling, Simulation & Training (MS&T) industry.

Geo STUDIO Pro 4.2 introduces significant improvements to editing workflows, large-model performance, GLTF/GLB interoperability, texture management, and scene editing tools, making it easier than ever to work with complex real-time visual databases.

Faster Workflow Through Multi-Tool Editing

One of the most significant additions in Geo STUDIO Pro 4.2 is a redesigned tool execution architecture that allows artists and database developers to launch and use secondary interactive tools without abandoning their current operation.

When an interrupting tool is activated, the current tool is automatically paused and preserved. Upon completion of the secondary task, the original tool resumes exactly where the user left off.

This enhancement dramatically streamlines common editing scenarios, such as creating construction points, adjusting grids, or performing precision geometry edits while another modeling operation is already in progress.

Improved Support for Large Models

Geo STUDIO Pro 4.2 delivers major performance improvements when working with large, high-triangle-count models.

A critical optimization in selection management eliminates unnecessary rebuilding of internal picking structures and optimized renderers, resulting in dramatically faster operations including:

  • Picking

  • Fence Selection

  • Isolate/Un-Isolate

  • Hide/Show Operations

Users working with models containing hundreds of thousands of triangles will notice a substantial improvement in responsiveness and interactive performance.

Enhanced Wavefront OBJ Importing

A new Wavefront OBJ preferences panel gives users greater control over the import process.

By default, imported OBJ files can now be automatically converted into optimized triangle mesh structures suitable for real-time applications. Since many OBJ models originate from CAD and DCC workflows rather than simulation systems, this optimization can significantly improve performance and usability.

Import optimization is performed in a background thread, allowing Geo STUDIO Pro to become responsive much sooner when loading large datasets.

New ColorBlend Selection Mode

Geo STUDIO Pro 4.2 introduces a new ColorBlend selection visualization mode.

Unlike traditional wireframe highlighting, ColorBlend overlays a translucent selection color while preserving visibility of underlying materials and textures. This approach is particularly useful when working with dense GLTF models and high-triangle-count assets where wireframe overlays can clutter the view.

The result is a cleaner, more intuitive editing experience for modern visual databases.

Expanded Geometry Editing Capabilities

Several geometry editing enhancements have been added, including:

  • Improved face shrinking workflow

  • Support for shrinking triangle meshes and PrimSet nodes

  • More intuitive vertex editing behavior

  • Enhanced access to individual polygon vertices during modeling operations

These improvements provide artists with finer control over geometry creation and modification tasks.

Improved GLTF and GLB Workflow

Version 4.2 includes numerous enhancements to GLTF and GLB interoperability:

  • Fixed import failures affecting very large GLTF/GLB files

  • Embedded GLB textures are now correctly exported when saving to OpenFlight & Aechelon HIE formats

  • Meaningful image names from source files are preserved during import and export operations

  • Improved conversion of GLB PBR materials when exporting to OpenFlight

These improvements simplify asset exchange between modern content creation tools and simulation-oriented runtime formats.

Better Texture Management

To help users manage GPU memory consumption, Geo STUDIO Pro 4.2 introduces a new Clamp Texture Resolution preference.

This option automatically limits texture dimensions to a user-specified maximum size, making it easier to work with models containing numerous 4K textures without exhausting graphics memory resources.

Additional texture management improvements include:

  • Larger texture thumbnails within the Texture Palette

  • Improved texture naming preservation

  • Resolution of texture handling issues affecting files with more than 100 textures

Additional Enhancements

Other notable additions and fixes include:

  • New interactive Grid and Helper Point tools

  • Updated Radial Menu workflows

  • Improved Material Editor behavior

  • Simplified node renaming utilities

  • Enhanced file breadcrumb tooltips displaying full file paths

  • New tutorial content demonstrating state-machine-driven animation workflows

Availability

Geo STUDIO Pro 4.2 is available immediately for customers with active maintenance agreements or lifetime maintenance coverage.
